FSSAI License FAQ

Every question about FSSAI registration and food licensing in India — answered clearly by our experts.

Basics & Eligibility

Yes — every person or entity engaged in any food-related business activity in India must have a FSSAI registration or license. This includes manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution, import, export, and sale (including online) of food. Even home-based food businesses selling food online must have FSSAI registration. Penalty for non-compliance: up to ₹5 lakh.
Depends on your annual turnover: Below ₹12 lakh → Basic Registration (₹100/year). ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore → State License (most restaurants). Above ₹20 crore → Central License. Most standalone restaurants, cafes, dhabas, and cloud kitchens need a State License. Multi-city restaurant chains with revenue above ₹20 crore need Central License.
Yes! If you sell food made at home — whether through Instagram, Zomato, WhatsApp, or any other channel — you need FSSAI registration. Basic Registration (₹100 govt fee) is sufficient if your turnover is below ₹12 lakh. Without it, you risk penalties and platform removal. We process home baker FSSAI registration in 7 days.
Absolutely yes. Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon Food, Dunzo, and all other food delivery platforms mandatorily require FSSAI registration number at the time of onboarding. Without it, your restaurant or food product listing will be rejected. We help you get the license fast so you can start selling online ASAP.

Renewal & Compliance

FSSAI licenses are issued for 1 to 5 years. You must apply for renewal at least 30 days before the expiry date. If you miss the deadline, you'll need to apply fresh (not renewal). We send renewal reminders well in advance and handle the complete renewal process for you.
All State and Central license holders must file Annual Return on the FoSCoS portal every year by 31st May. Form D1 is for manufacturers, packers, and private labellers. Form D2 is for importers. It includes details of products manufactured/sold during the financial year. Non-filing attracts penalty. We handle annual return filing for ₹999.
Under Food Safety and Standards Act 2006: Operating without license/registration — penalty up to ₹5 lakh. Selling unsafe food — up to ₹10 lakh and/or imprisonment. Misleading food advertisements — up to ₹10 lakh. Business can be immediately closed by Food Safety Officer. These penalties apply regardless of business size.
